Duncan Brodie asked:
As a leader you know just how vital it is to build trust in you and within a team. Creating an environment of trust is a real challenge for leaders. So what practical steps can you take to build an environment of trust?
Treat Everyone Fairly and with Respect
The way you treat people should not depend on their level of seniority or level of influence. Good leaders recognise that part of creating an environment of trust is to treat everyone fairly and respect everyone.
Really Listen To Ideas
The vast majority of people spend huge amounts of time at work and want to contribute. Often it is people closest to the point of delivery that really see potential opportunities to improve working practices or deliver a much better service. Listen actively and take a real interest in their ideas.
Be Honest With People
There will be times when tough decisions need to be made. Don’t try to brush this fact under the carpet. Let people know that things may have to change and let them know that you will deal with it professionally and with compassion.
Avoid Putting People Down
It is easy to fall into the trap of putting people down. You know saying things about them to colleagues for example. If you notice that you do this, take note and be alert to it in the future. If you want to go even further, ask your people to let you know when they feel like you are putting them down.
Stand Up For Your People
Assuming that they have not broken the law, you should make a point of standing up and fighting your corner for the team. This is even more important when they are under pressure. It takes courage but will get you a huge amount of respect.
Bottom Line- If you are working in an environment where you are a leader and have low levels of trust, getting results will be a huge challenge. What actions do you need to take to build more trust so that you can achieve more success?
